
‘Japanese craze’ fuels high demand for passports
159 Nigerians renounced citizenship in 2022 – Interior ministry .
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, at least 159 Nigerians have renounced their citizenship in 2022 alone.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Shuaib Belgor made the announcement Thursday at the 64th Ministerial Briefing held at the Chamber of Commerce hosted by the Presidential Communications Team at Aso Rock Villa.
According to Belgor, between 2006 and 2021, 150 Nigerians renounced their citizenship.
But in 2022, 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenship.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rauf Aregvesola said demand for passports was soaring as Nigerians migrated in droves in search of greener pastures.
Aregbesola said that in 2022, immigration has issued 1,899,683 passport booklets in the past seven years.
