Labor leader Peter Obi has been declared victorious in the presidential elections held in Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous state.
Obi secured his 582,454 votes to beat his closest challenger, his APC’s Bola Tinubu, with his 572,606 votes.PDP’s Atiku Abubakar came in third with his 75,750 votes.
A total of 1,347,152 voters were certified as voters in Lagos, a state where Mr. Tinubu holds much political control and influence.
While Mr. Tinubu’s APC won the majority of his 20 municipalities in Lagos (11), Mr. Obi’s vote share was generally high and he also won his remaining nine municipalities. The result is described by many analysts as demystifying Tinub, who was predicted to win as governor from 1999 to 2007.
How the candidates fought.
Obi, the former governor of Anambra state in southeastern Nigeria, enjoys strong support from voters, especially in areas with dense populations of non-Yoruba-speaking residents.
The APC’s campaign for a Muslim-Muslim presidential candidate was also seen by many as “evil, callous and insensitive” and provoked what some members of the ruling party described as protest votes against the candidacy ticket. .
The local administrative districts won by Mr. Obi are Kosofe, Etiosa, Ojo, Amwohi Odofin, Somol, Ikeja, Ajeromiyferodun, Alimosho and Oshodiisolo.
Tinub
APC candidate Tinub won his 11 municipalities in the state, but received less than 10,000 fewer total votes than Obi.
The municipalities acquired by Tinub are Lagos Island, Ibeju Lekki, Apapa, Lagos Mainland, Ifaco Ijaye, Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, Agege, Musin and Surulele. Tinub also lost his local government, which elected Ikeja on Saturday, to Obi, who received 30,004 votes against Tinub’s 21,276.
Alimosho, the municipality with the highest voter turnout in the state, also won for Obi. Municipal territories have always provided a large buffer for the ruling party, but the results of the 2023 elections have come as a shock to many.
According to local government results, political parties scored a total of 158,209 votes, of which 147,870 were valid and 10,339 votes were rejected.
Of the total votes cast, Obi received 71,327 votes and Tinub received 62,909. PDP’s Atiku received 8,201 votes.
Possible result
Many Lagos residents have praised the poll results, saying they could make a big difference in the state’s upcoming gubernatorial elections.
Many believers who support the state’s ruling party have also expressed shock at the outcome, with some leaders urging local leaders to either unite and work for their party or face sanctions.
